Making 2022 an Impactful Year of Renewal

Thank you to the record number of over 1,800 across IS & RESO who joined our January 19 Open Forum. It was a great chance to do some meaningful recognition of our caregivers’ contributions and walk through our 2022 Strategic Plan.

In the past few days leaders across the organization have had the opportunity to learn in some more detail about the challenges Providence faces because of the prolonged COVID crisis. In our workforce, so many of our caregivers have endured significant trauma and burnout at the same time as our system has faced cost increases to our operations and the negative impact multiple surges have had on our revenues. All of this means 2022 will be a very challenging year, particularly the first half of the year.

Across the system, we are being asked to re-double our efforts to reduce discretionary spend, slow down hiring, and look at projects and activities that can be paused to conserve resources. My leadership team and caregivers across IS & RESO are stepping up to do our part, while ensuring critical services. We are doing this while being thoughtful and balanced, so that modernization continues in support of our recovery and looking ahead at our long-term Destination Health 2025 goals. This includes keeping the trains and operations running smoothly, focusing on efforts that give Providence caregivers increased productivity and improved experiences. It also means accelerating anything that can provide increased cash collections, revenue, or cost savings in the next six months. Finally, it’s very important to reiterate Providence’s resolve to remain committed to continuing to invest in and support our caregivers . . .

Happy New Year, IS & RESO!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday with their family and friends.

Thank you to everyone who joined our December 15 IS & RESO Christmas Virtual Social and Open Forum, and who contributed to our Mission raffle fundraiser benefitting Clare’s Place. Once again, I’m so impressed with the generosity of our IS & RESO organization. Together, we raised over $9,900 to help fund Clare’s Place supportive housing and programs for families. A big thank you to our organizing committee, activity facilitators, and musicians who help produce our third large-scale virtual social event!

On our upcoming January 19 Open Forum (invite coming soon), I want to look back on our 2021 achievements in IS & RESO, and talk about our strategic priorities for 2022. I am very proud of the progress we’ve made so far and this year is pivotal in our simplify, modernize and innovate journey and further integrating and maximizing impact across IS and RESO . I am very excited about the work ahead as we keep our fellow caregivers’ and patients’ experience at the core of everything we develop and support . . .

Thank You for Your Feedback, a Historic Mission Milestone, and Dec. 15 Christmas Social

Once again, I’m appreciative of the great participation across IS & RESO on the 2021 Caregiver Experience Survey. During another very challenging year, we saw 83% survey response across our combined organization – 90% of IS and 76% of RESO – thank you! My leadership team, the IS & RESO Caregiver Experience Committee, and core leaders across the organization are in the process of unpacking the results and will be outlining an action plan in January. In the meantime, I want to share that our combined Highly Sustainably Engaged score of 60% (up 3% from historical) shows that, although we’ve had a challenging past year, we’re continuing to make progress and trending better than our healthcare industry peers. Some of the emerging key themes for IS & RESO include workload and resonance with the mission. These and other focus areas will also help us define our efforts and investment to improve caregiver experience in 2022.

Our Mission leaders, remind me that today is a very exciting anniversary for Providence. 165 years ago today, pioneering Sisters led from Montreal by Sister Joseph, who had ventured west across sea and land, reached the muddy banks of the Columbia River at Fort Vancouver in what was then the Washington Territory. They persevered with tremendous energy and fortitude through the challenges and harsh conditions they experienced, determined to serve the most poor and vulnerable. By 1858, those first Sisters had opened St. Joseph Hospital, the Northwest’s first permanent hospital. By the end of Sister Joseph’s leadership, they had expanded to 30 locations, ranging from hospitals, orphanages, homes for the elderly, and schools. I hope you’re as inspired by reflecting on that passion for our Mission, their energy, and their vision as much as I am.

Finally, I’m looking forward to our second-annual IS & RESO Christmas Virtual Social, including a shortened Open Forum, fun activities for all, and opportunities for children to see Santa! It will be a great chance to pause to have some fun together across geographies and get in the spirit of the season . . .

2021 Caregiver Experience Survey and Appreciation All Around

Today, our 2021 Caregiver Experience Survey opens. As we navigate the challenges and disruption of the past year and a half, I appreciate this organization’s steadfastness in supporting our caregivers across the system, our communities, and our Mission. Your feedback focuses our efforts on what are the most impactful things we can do to make you feel inspired, empowered, connected, supported, and valued. Please take the time to respond to the survey.

My leadership team and I recently had the chance to review the great work of our Caregiver Experience Committee and the actions functional pillars have been doing to address caregiver feedback . This includes the pillar specific initiatives, burnout focus groups and executive engagement such as the Fireside Chats with system leadership. Just a couple weeks ago, I recorded our ninth Fireside Chat with Sister Susanne Hartung where we discussed the impact of the vital day-to-day work we all do contributes to our mission. I encourage you to check it out!

October is a special month within RESO because we honor two very critical functions with special celebratory appreciation weeks—first, Security, then later in the month, Facilities Engineering. On behalf of Providence leadership, I want to thank Security for your work through this challenging past year, ensuring the physical security of our ministries and keeping our caregivers safe. The hard work you do every day to support our Mission is noticed and appreciated. And to our Facilities Engineering teams, I want to recognize your tremendous service in keeping our facilities running smoothly through this challenging past year. You support our Mission by getting the highest performance out of our built infrastructure during a period where our environments of care have been stretched and are highly valued partners to our regions and ministries . . .

Gratitude to Environmental Services and for Supporting Our Mission at Summer Social

I hope you all had a great extended Labor Day weekend (and for our PGC caregivers, will enjoy a nice day off for Chaturthi on Friday)!

On September 12-18, we will celebrate Environmental Services (EVS) appreciation week. I want to share a HUGE thank you to our EVS caregivers. EVS has played such a critical role throughout COVID and have complex, sometimes underappreciated roles in our ministries. Check out our article about EVS appreciation week and the story of one of our Oregon marketing leaders who volunteered alongside EVS and came away with enormous respect for their contributions. I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but Kerrie Bartel-Christensen and I recorded a special “thank you” message that we’ve provided to EVS core leaders to share during huddles and team meetings. We will share it with all next month.

I had fun joining our IS & RESO Virtual Summer Social. I heard great feedback all around and we had strong participation – over 1,200 of us (+57% from last summer’s first virtual social). It was also great to see so many participate across RESO, PGC, and IS, as well as across regions. What is most impressive and most significant to me, is the generosity and support to our Mission across IS & RESO. Our Summer Social Raffle, which closed last Friday, raised over $12,000 for YWCA of Spokane programs helping women and children escaping domestic violence . . .

Transitions and the Biggest Month Yet for Epic

Thank you to all who joined our IS & RESO Open Forum last Thursday. During the Forum, I shared the news about the departure of John Milne, M.D., as SVP of RESO. A nationwide executive search is underway for a permanent executive leader of the Real Estate function for Providence. Andrew Haslam, VP of Real Estate, is taking over interim RESO leadership duties. We appreciate John’s leadership and contributions during the past years.

On Thursday, we also discussed the COVID-19 crisis in India. Our thoughts, prayers and support go to our PGC caregivers, as they look after their own safety and the health of their family and friends during this difficult time. We will continue to closely monitor the situation.

I want to again acknowledge the hard and groundbreaking work led by our IS Clinical Applications & Revenue Cycle team as they prepare for the history-making go-live of Epic for Orange County/High Desert (OCHD) on May 15. We look forward to sharing news of our go-live success and the early wins from moving to a single electronic health record . . .

Progress and Hope for a Much Better Spring

On February 17, we had one of our largest-yet IS & RESO Open Forums. Thanks to the over 1,900 who joined us to hear updates and asked questions of our execs. It was also very inspiring to hear RESO’s efforts carrying on our Mission with their work on supportive housing.

I hope you saw my message on Monday about the launch of our new quarterly peer-nomination IS & RESO Awards program. The new SMIle Awards will help us honor individual caregivers and teams who demonstrate our IS & RESO principles of Simplify, Modernize, and Innovate, lead with excellence, and, of course, live our values and Mission.

During my update on Open Forum, I had shared a little bit about the exciting announcement of our Truveta data consortium launching with 13 health systems nationwide. Our work on our own health data platform, as well as its integration with other massive data sets can drive tremendous improvements in our care and our approach population health and is one of our key priorities . . .
