Project Update: First Hill North Tower Construction – May 2024

New additions including the South crane have arrived at the First Hill North Tower construction site!

First 100 feet of the South crane installed on the southeast side of the construction site

As activities continue around the site, new equipment essential for building the structure of North Tower has been installed. In May, a second crane, named South crane, was installed on the southeast side. The first 100 feet of the base was installed over two days, May 18 and 19, with the remaining sections to be added prior to above-ground level building construction. This new addition is a “luffing crane” which means its extended horizontal arm can be raised and lowered, allowing it to work in more compact spaces than its neighboring crane, the North crane. Just shy of half the height of the Space Needle (292 feet), the crane’s reach radius will be an additional 197 feet. It can also lift a total of nearly three elephants, or 39,000 pounds.

The first concrete pours were also completed in mid-May, which will be the base of the future North Tower building. Enough concrete was poured at the site to fill nearly ¾ of an Olympic-sized swimming pool (482,400 gallons). In conjunction with the foundation formation, digging for utilities including electricity and plumbing has started.

North Tower construction started in January 2024, and over the next several years there will be many exciting milestones along the way to deliver this innovative building that will offer tremendous benefits for caregivers and the community.  Tentative completion is estimated for Fall 2027.
