St. Mary Medical Center Hot Water Overhaul

A few months back, the St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, Washington embarked on a transformative mission: revolutionizing their antiquated hot water system. The goal? A greener, more sustainable method of supplying hot water throughout the hospital.

3 of the 4 large tanks that needed consistent heating to keep water ready for use.

What was the project? A 50-year-old system, featuring four colossal tanks holding a whopping 16,000 gallons of water, giving way to a sleek, on-demand tankless system reminiscent of cutting-edge technology in modern homes.

The logistics were intricate. Multiple PSMMC Staff, Apollo Mechanical, and Bouten Construction, orchestrated a strategic shutdown during a late Saturday night into Sunday morning. The results were zero impacts to hospital operations, with the crew even indulging in a midnight pizza break! Extreme precision was required to remove two 5,000 and two 3,000-pound tanks via crane, all while safeguarding patients, staff, deliveries, and the bulk oxygen tank system. The operation lasted about 4 hours, with a seamless transition!

The new tankless on demand boasts efficiency, safety, reduced maintenance, and will greatly reduce the risk of Legionella. The system’s redundancy simplifies technician handoffs during maintenance. Monitored by the Building Automated System (BAS), optimal performance is practically guaranteed.

The facilities team has been given a new space – once a sauna with those hefty hot water tanks, now a blank canvas.

RESO anticipates the gas savings over the system’s lifespan promise not just efficiency but substantial cost savings. St. Mary Medical Center has truly ushered in a new era of sustainability and streamlined functionality.
