This is an email that Mike Denney, GVP, RESO, shared to RESO caregivers on September 14, 2022.
As we align with the new Providence organization model, the RESO leadership team continues to refine our organizational structure to deliver consistent services supporting all our ministries. As we overcome historic challenges, we are called to pursue opportunities to improve our financial and operational performance and create a sustainable real estate portfolio to support Providence and our Mission.
The greatest opportunity for cost management occurs during the planning and design phase of every project and in the way we allocate space. Moving forward, RESO will partner in a more deliberate way with our Division Chief Strategy Officers and their teams to drive value and focus on the projects that are prioritized to align with our needs and capital capacity.
As a result, RESO will be restructuring our approach to capital projects and developing a dedicated Planning & Design team. Although this transition will not occur overnight, I want to give everyone a high-level vision of where we are headed so we can work together to develop the right platforms and processes to support our teams.
- Over time, the leadership of our planning scope will transition to Sommer Miller, ED RESO, Planning & Design, and her evolving team.
- Ultimately, the Planning & Design Team will be responsible for collaboration with Strategy and then lead approved capital projects from inception through design development (DD).
- The RESO Construction Management team will continue to be engaged at all stages of each project and serve a critical role in the design phase, working collaboratively with the Planning & Design team.
- The Planning & Design team will hand off ownership of projects to our Construction Management team at DD and remain engaged to support the Construction Management team through the handoff to Operations (EOC).
- EOC (Facilities, EVS, Safety & Security) will be engaged during all stages of the project to ensure safe and efficient operations. EOC will take ownership of the project at substantial completion.
- Together, Planning & Design + Construction Management + EOC make a formidable team to ensure we maximize the value of our projects and the strengths of our teams.
With limited resources, we must provide an organizational model that allows every caregiver on the RESO team to focus on their core business and maximize their strengths. This is not a position reduction strategy, as it creates roles in Planning & Design, but I appreciate that it represents a change in our approach and may create unintended anxiety. The intent of this new organization model is to intensify our focus and expertise in both Planning & Design as well as Construction Project Management and it may create opportunities for some of our caregivers to focus on the planning & design phases of projects and transition to Sommer’s team in regional roles.
We will have additional communication from Sommer Miller later today outlining the new structure for the RESO Planning & Design Team and I look forward to discussing this model in our upcoming council meetings. I appreciate everyone’s ongoing patience and support as Sommer develops a team of subject matter experts to focus on this work and creates the optimal model for the initial phases of projects at Providence.
