Alaska Facilities Replace Patient Handling Equipment

The RESO facility team in Seward, Alaska recently completed much-needed patient handling equipment replacements at the four Mt. Haven Long Term Care lodges.

New scale with flip-down seat

Old scales for measuring patients at the bedside were approaching the “end of life” cycle and required replacement to ensure resident care and safety.

The newer units offer more features, and are much lighter and safer for caregivers recording patient weight. They also have a flip-down seat for residents that are mobile to relax while their weight is being recorded.

Overhead lift system

Additionally, new Arjo Maxi Sky lifts were installed in each of the 40 residents’ rooms.

The project team stayed with the legacy brand to allow for the same overhead tracking system to reduce time. These lifter tracks have a split track system that, when upon reaching the restroom, will either branch to the shower, or to the toilet with a push of a button, depending on where the operator needs it to go.

Scales are attached to the lifter to take accurate weight and provide safer caregiver ergonomics, reducing risk of injury. The lifts also have a recording feature that counts the number of lifts, storing the information, then sharing a code or a “maintenance due” signal for the facilities team’s information. They have a life expectancy of eight to 10 years, depending on the number of daily lifts counted.
