My Ministry Story: EVS Caregiver Participates in Celebration of COVID Discharge

In this caregiver contribution by Kathy Ison, manager, Environmental Services at Providence Seaside Hospital in Oregon, she reflects on the touching way caregivers at her hospital honored the discharge of a COVID-19 patient.

In December, I was able to participate in my first clap out. A tradition recognizing patients when they leave the hospital and this one honors a COVID patient who was ready for discharge. The patient had been in the hospital for 130 days at Providence Seaside Hospital (Oregon), then was transferred to a Portland hospital, before returning to Seaside for rehabilitation.

As the patient’s discharge date approached, the caregivers planned for the clap out. The patient’s walker was decorated, and as requested, the theme song from Rocky was ready to play as the patient walks the halls. The rehab team acquired boxing gloves, stripped silk shorts, and a cape for the patient. The therapy team joined in with the theme by dressing up in training clothes. As this brave patient donned the door of the room, caregivers lined the hallway, extending from the MedSurg unit to the lobby.

Although I had not personally met this patient, I could see the love in each of the caregivers’ eyes as the patient strolled past them.

Throughout my 33 years, there have been several celebrations. This one came close to the top. I am thankful that I get to serve with such amazing caregivers at Seaside. It truly brings joy during in a difficult season to witness so much love.
