Permissions for large Microsoft 365 Groups (M365 groups) have been updated to maximize the efficiency of the groups. “Send” and “Reply All” functionality has been restricted to group owners and authorized senders for M365 groups with 200+ members. Group owners can request permission for specific group members or non-members to Send/Reply All if necessary.
If anyone other than an owner or authorized sender of a large M365 group tries to send an email or “Reply All” to an existing email, they will receive a banner stating they do not have permission to send to the M365 group as shown below.
Moving forward, the “Send” and “Reply All” functionality will be disabled in newly-created M365 Groups.
When is this happening?
As of November 19, 2021, members and non-members of M365 groups are unable to Send or Reply All to M365 groups with 200 or more members. Group members can still reply directly to the sender.
Please note this does not impact query-based distribution lists (QBDLs), the auto-populated lists that were developed prior to the implementation of M365 groups and the move to the Office 365.
What do I need to do?
No action is necessary unless you need permission to Send or Reply All to a large M365 group. Contact the M365 group owner to request permission, and then the group owner will submit a request form to add or remove permission to Send/Reply All. The request form may also be used by M365 group owners to remove the ability to Send/Reply All for members in M365 Groups with less than 200 members.
