HI Completes EDW to CDW Data Migration

IS Healthcare Intelligence (HI) has completed moving the PHS Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) into the Cloud Data Warehouse (CDW). This accomplishment caps a year of collaborative effort between HI and our partners. It advances our technology from legacy, on-premises systems into our cloud platforms – Health Data Platform in Azure and our CDW in Snowflake, both at the leading edge of data computing and analytics product lines.

What did we accomplish?

All 194 databases in the EDW were migrated or sunset.

  • 104 databases, or components within, were migrated to CDW
  • Nine were migrated to Azure to remain temporarily until sunset
  • 81 were determined to be unneeded or unused, and sunset

Why did we do all this now?

The EDW to CDW transition was an essential step forward in our Providence “Cloud First” priority.

  • Move beyond on-premises equipment for the benefits of cloud computing
  • Our platforms, software, and hardware will always be up-to-date utilizing Microsoft data centers
  • More processing power that we can easily adjust to our needs
  • Better cost tracking to enable chargebacks
  • Improved reliability; reduced disruptions due to replacement, upgrades, and data load
  • Support our WE ACT goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030, with cloud efficiencies of scale reducing our energy consumption

What did we get?

As we approached the end of this migration, we were already getting results:

  • Drastic performance gains – In CDW, Vantage processes in 135 minutes; whereas, in EDW, it took over 14 days.
  • HI ingests about 25 unique sources of data into the CDW that supply curated products downstream, including Clarity, Lawson, Kronos, Meditech, IDX, Hyperion, Insights, Press Ganey, and Twistle.
  • HI data products are now in CDW, including Synergy, Vantage, Master Data Management (Provider, Patient, Location), Patient Satisfaction, Predictive Staffing, Forecasting, Position Management, etc.
  • Positive CDW adoption with our partner groups, including Clinical Analytics, Population Health, Health Insights, Ambulatory Care Network, Physician Enterprises, Telehealth, Marketing, Digital Innovation, Real Estate, Hierarchical Condition Categories (HCC), Revenue Cycle, IS Administrative Technology, and more.
  • Partners can manage their own cloud data spaces – 28 have databases.
  • Over 900 users can directly query CDW databases.
  • 589 users have signed up for the CDW distribution lists.
