On June 23, IS Healthcare Intelligence (HI) implemented an enterprise data catalog (EDC), which contains an organized inventory of data assets, including the contents of a database, table, or column (technical metadata), the sources of such data, and the dashboards that present that data (data lineage). The initial scope of EDC includes a variety of sources in the Cloud Data Warehouse (CDW) and Tableau dashboards. The EDC, business glossary, and data quality platform (all of which are in production) comprise the technology component of data governance.
What is Data governance?
Data governance is an integrated framework of people, processes, and technology that enable appropriate and consistent use of data to meet business needs. While some of the roles (people) and processes had already been defined and implemented, until now the technology component had been limited to the development of business glossary terms and definitions and data quality.
Benefits
This implementation of the EDC completes our data governance platform, so data stakeholders, including business data stewards, BI developers, and data architects, get the following:
- Discovery of available technical metadata from data stores and dashboards linked to the EDC
- For example, identify all reports, dashboards, databases, tables, columns, etc. that show a particular business term; see Example Usage: Informatica EDC
- Availability of data lineage from upstream sources (where it came from) to downstream consumption (where it’s used)
- Identification of similar metrics and dashboards for potential re-use
- System-level consistency of business term naming conventions and definitions with lineage to data in tables and columns
- Visibility to the state of data quality
Next steps
HI will continue developing and vetting the roles, processes, and applications for continuous improvement. HI plans to build a comprehensive inventory of technical metadata and data lineage including all supported data stores and visualization platforms. As new use cases, projects, metrics, and other proposed uses of data are identified and defined, our goal is to develop business metadata as part of use case development and link it to the technical metadata.
Additional details
- The business glossary and enterprise data catalog show information about the data stored in tables and columns or displayed in dashboards.
- PHI is not exposed; the tools do not show actual data.
- Informatica Axon and EDC are accessible via Azure MyApps.
- Future roadmap items include:
- Integration with Power BI
- Data classification
- End-to-end data privacy and policy management
