IS Admin Tech Introduces IRC Tool for Nurse Time Off/Staffing Requests

The Integrated Resource Center (IRC) is a simple, self-service solution built for frontline nurses to allow them to request time off outside the network seamlessly and easily, in addition to charge nurses submitting their projected resource requirements.

The final product was built in close partnership between IS Administrative Technology, Providence Global Center, and the HR Workforce Strategy teams. It’s also a great example of aligning both the IS priority of improving caregiver experience and the HR strategy to centralize and standardize staffing, timekeeping, and contract labor management.

The revamped Phase 2 solution enhances the caregiver requisition and availability reporting experience in hospitals by replacing an existing Microsoft PowerApps and InfoPath-based solution with a high-performance, self-service-configurable, modern .NET solution. This approach makes it simpler for application admins to add new regions, facilities, and skills without the need to re-deploy the solution to newer regions.

Technology improvements

The Phase 2 solution is built using a modern Azure .NET stack that includes Angular v8.0 for front-end, ASP.NET core APIs, including Graph API for search, Azure SQL back-end, and Power BI for interactive dashboards. Along with the new technical stack, focus has been placed on modern engineering practices including telemetry, CI/CD pipelines for code deployment, Azure Key vault for security, end user personalization, customization for admins, and user data privacy. Also, caregivers can now access the portal over the internet from outside the Providence network.

Rollout

  • June 6, 2021 – IRC phase 2 went live at Providence St. Peter Hospital and Providence Centralia Hospital in southwest Washington
  • June 21, 2021 – Rolled out to rolled out to four Eastern Washington facilities—Providence Holy Family Hospital, Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Providence Mount Carmel Hospital, and Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital
  • July through November 2021 – Roll-outs for Oregon, Montana, and Washington’s Kadlec Medical Center in Richland and St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla

So far, in the first few weeks of its launch in Southwest Washington facilities, the solution was leveraged by approximately 460 caregivers to create around 2,100 staffing projection requests and 620 voluntary time off requests.
