HI Expands Patient Master Data System-Wide

On May 5, IS Healthcare Intelligence (HI) expanded our patient master data to include legacy St. Joseph Health information from the Meditech system. With sponsorship from Population Health, the HI Data Engineering team now has mastered records across the entire system in Patient MDM (master data management). This initiative is key to ensuring accuracy and completeness for our healthcare data analytics and reporting needs.

What is MDM?

Patient MDM combines the data from different sources to identify and maintain the demographic information for each person in our system. It allows data analysts and report developers to use a single record, rather than having to access multiple systems. Maintaining its accuracy over time is not a trivial challenge; the system needs to address many challenges to master data fidelity, such as:

  • Standardized reference values
  • Matching records and creating a single golden record per patient
  • Verification of addresses, email addresses, phone numbers against national databases
  • Geolocation data for all verified addresses against the 2020 Census
  • Daily updates to patient records including patient address, emails, phones, names, gender, etc.

System-wide scope

All patients from Providence electronic medical record (EMR) sources, including Meditech, Epic, and IDX, are loaded and mastered in Patient MDM in the Cloud Data Warehouse (CDW). This release added Meditech data to the mastered population of patients from Epic and IDX records.

Additional details

  • Mastering is done via the cloud-based Profisee MDM tool.
  • Master patient data is accessible to report developers in CDW Synergy.
  • Future roadmap items include patient data from:
    • Social Security Death Index (SSDI)
    • Twistle and Tonic (patient engagement)
