Automated User Provisioning within Epic Filed As First IS Patent Application

The IS Patent Program filed our first patent application in February 2020. While the application was filed several months ago, we want to congratulate the inventors of record. The acceptance of the formal patent application by the government is a critical milestone in the patent application process (that can take up to three years) and share a bit about this internal intellectual property development.

The patent filing was for “Automatic User Provisioning, such as the automatic creation of provider profiles in an electronic medical record system,” a method to automate Schedulable Epic Resources (SERs). SERs are the clinical user records, and unique to their clinical role (MD vs RN as a simple example), as opposed to the Employee User Records (EMP) that all caregivers with access to Epic have.

SER records help dictate what clinical users are able to access or perform within Epic. The significance of this patent is profound. While the automation of EMPs has been done before, the creation and linking an SER to an Employee record previously complicated automation and required custom integration and logic to resolve. This innovation succeeded in accomplishing that link, saving time and effort in the creation of Epic profiles.

This new automated method for Epic profile provisioning has been in use within Providence for the creation of SERs via the Providence IAM Portal (aka SailPoint) and is a testament to the ingenuity and skill of our team.

Belated congratulations to the inventors of record for this filing: Raju Datla, Jose Galindo, Jan Rapp and Paul Cooke from the Epic and Identity & Access Management teams. This team of inventors also received a $500 incentive award from Providence for their ingenuity.

We are fortunate to now have the “Providence IS Patent Process Handbook,” allowing for future innovations to be more rapidly recognized.
