This past Sunday there were multiple people out sick at Covenant Plainview. I placed a call to Jennifer Rodriquez at Grace Surgical to see if she would be able to go to Plainview to help. She gathered up 3 additional caregivers from Grace Surgical and they went to Plainview to ensure all rooms were cleaned for the day. It was a last-minute request that was met with amazing responsiveness. ~ Kelly Flippen – senior director, environment of care
Angela Corona, evs technician – Covenant Hosp Plainview – Plainview, Texas
Keosha Barrow, evs technician – Covenant Hosp Plainview – Plainview, Texas
Angela and Keosha are both caregivers at Covenant Plainview. They received recognition from the CNO for responsiveness in getting the Emergency Department cleaned during a staff shortage. The comment was “I worked the ED on Saturday. EVS was short staffed but two of the EVS caregivers on duty pitched in together and really did a great job! I saw them working together as a team. They had a plan and knocked it out. I was very proud of them and watching them work so hard and fast and getting things done.” ~ Kelly Flippen – senior director, environment of care

Janet Polum, program support assistant– Providence Kodiak Alaska Medical Center – Kodiak, Alaska
Janet has been a long-term employee for 25+ years here in Kodiak and is the foundation of our RESO Facilities team. Janet not only supports our daily operations here in Kodiak, but also manages a fleet of 29 vehicles and 57+ apartments for traveling caregivers. This includes our new 16 plex, Bartel apartments, that are designated for new full-time caregivers that relocate to Kodiak Island. Janet has been instrumental in writing policies and rental lease agreements for vehicles and apartments. There are a large number of traveling caregivers that temporarily relocate to and from Kodiak to fulfill short term contracts here at Providence. A large part of Janet’s job is making sure that when they arrive in Kodiak, everything from their apartment to their vehicle is set up, so their transition is smooth and stress free. Janet manages all work needing completed on the apartments as well as making sure they are adequately cleaned once a caregiver moves out.
Travelers are constantly coming into our office for any questions they have and a lot of time they just come in to say thank you to Janet for making everything perfect for them when they arrive. At times things can get hectic managing vehicles and the large number of apartments. No matter how busy things get for Janet, she always perseveres, making sure all her work is completed by the end of the day. Janet has a great attitude, work ethic, and is always early to work so she can plan her day accordingly, and no matter how busy things get, I can always look up and she has a smile on her face.
Currently the Seward Alaska facility has their Program Support Assistant open, so Janet has taken on the task of helping manage their traveling and full-time caregiver relocations. You can imagine how full her plate is. But no matter how busy Janet is, she still watches over my schedule, making sure I don’t miss any meetings and always provides great feedback whenever anybody comes into the office with questions.
Another great thing about Janet is since she has worked here in Kodiak for 25+ years, she also has great insight on how things were managed in various departments in the past. At times, she is able to provide invaluable insight when there are questions about matters of the past, which has at times been key to repeating or not repeating something that has or hasn’t worked here in Kodiak.
I’ve managed a lot of employees in the past and can honestly say, I have not managed an employee as wonderful as Janet Polum. As a Senior Leader here in Kodiak, she helps make my day run smoothly, even in the most hectic of times. The best part is no matter what is going on in our office, she is always smiling and always has a positive way to look at the day. Thank you, Janet! ~ Victor Weaver – senior manager, facilities
Kenneth Rodriguez, security officer– Providence Kodiak Alaska Medical Center – Kodiak, Alaska
I wanted to take a moment and recognize one of our staff members here at Kodiak Providence. I am a traveling Respiratory Therapist and have had the opportunity to work at several hospitals over the years and love to see individuals who go above and beyond. Working in the medical field is challenging and very rewarding, especially when you have a great team who strive to do their best for their community. Last week we had a very elderly patient come into the hospital by way of ambulance who needed life support intervention. The team worked to stabilize the patient and prepare them to fly to the mainland for care. Security Officer Ken Rodriguez (nightshift security) was assisting with gathering the patient’s belongings and noted he had dentures that would be part of the belonging that would be going with our patient. Officer Rodriguez took the patients dentures and cleaned them without hesitation, he expressed how he could see the patient had been sick for a long time and wanted them to have a clean set of teeth for when they recovered or for their family to receive if the outcome should be different.
Officer Rodriguez really speaks to the core principles of what Providence is about and what the Kodiak Hospital and staff bring to the Kodiak community. Thank you and have a great day, Tami Mahan, Respiratory Therapist. ~ Randy Hughes – senior director, safety, security and emergency management

On Monday 5/27/2024 a patient called his friend to bring in his wheelchair. At 12:12 the friend arrived with the wheelchair. The patient advised the physical therapist there was a loaded 38 handgun under the wheelchair, in the basket, he forgot to tell his friend to remove it. The physical therapist called Security. Security Supervisor Tasiga Toilolo retrieved the gun, rendered it safe, and secured it in the safe. Sergeant Toilolo advised the patient to call his friend back to retrieve the gun and submitted an HRP Event report. The swift actions of the St Elias team ensured the safety and security of the entire facility. ~ Randy Hughes – senior director, safety, security and emergency management
