Providence St. Vincent Medical Center’s Green Team increases engagement towards sustainability

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center’s Green Team has recently undergone a remarkable transformation, to a vibrant force for sustainability within the organization. Spearheaded by the enthusiasm and leadership of Chairperson Liz Tuttle, Manager Surgical Services RN, the team has experienced a resurgence in engagement, with increasing attendance and participation from various departments across the facility.

One of the team’s notable initiatives is the revitalization of the community garden, which had lain dormant for several years. Through collective effort and teamwork, the garden beds were rebuilt, utilizing donated lumber from a team member and new soil provided by a local landscaping company. Partnering with a local advisory group specializing in community gardens, the team is dedicated to maximizing the garden’s potential, fostering both environmental stewardship and community engagement.

In addition to physical projects, the Green Team is actively engaged in educational outreach. On Earth Day, they set up an informational table in the cafeteria, which garnered significant attention and positive feedback. Caregivers were educated on the importance of sustainability initiatives, with a focus on reducing plastic waste. The distribution of seed packets and reusable straws served as tangible reminders of the team’s commitment to environmental conservation.

Furthermore, the Green Team is taking proactive steps to reduce energy consumption within the facility. By participating in the Strategic Energy Management program facilitated by the Energy Trust of Oregon, they are providing guidance and incentives for implementing low and no-cost energy-saving measures. One simple idea shared was to incentivize night walks to ensure there are no lights left on in unoccupied spaces. This initiative not only reduces operating costs but also contributes to the organization’s broader sustainability goals.

The revitalization of the Green Team at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Oregon serves as a testament to the power of collective action and community engagement in driving positive change. With the active participation of leaders across the ministry, the team has emerged as a catalyst for sustainability, inspiring caregivers and stakeholders alike to embrace environmentally responsible practices. As they continue to grow and innovate, the Green Team remains steadfast in their commitment to creating a greener, more sustainable future for their community and beyond.
