Karen Santino, supervisor environmental services – Centralia Hospital – Centralia, Washington
Do not underestimate the pinned-up hair, petite stature, and long skirt. Karen Santino, our EVS Supervisor, is a warrior. She successfully navigates the hurdles that come with an EVS team. Daily staffing challenges, interpersonal relationship issues, new person orientation, education and reeducation are just some of the things Karen does extremely well, just like many of our EVS leaders. What Karen is exceptional at is working with the influx of patients and room readiness. She is a hands-on, face to face communicator with Nursing Supervision. She stays on point with upcoming discharges and communication with her team, so rooms are turned over quickly and efficiently. She strives for excellence and reflects Our Mission and Values to a T. Lauren Cole visited Prov. Swedish Centralia Hospital to assess our ED waiting area and helped us with some of the challenges we are having with flow and aged mismatched seating. Congratulations to Omar Castro, Tina Landeros, and their team members for completing the Providence Business Challenge (PBC)! This accomplishment marks a significant milestone in stepping out of the comfort zone, broadening horizons beyond their usual specialties in Environmental Services (EVS), and engaging deeply with the complex and evolving landscape of healthcare business challenges. The PBC is a unique, project-based leadership development experience that brings together highly talented individuals from various disciplines within Providence. Their team focused on enhancing patient education, a critical area that directly impacts patient care and outcomes. Over six months, participants collaborate to produce meaningful recommendations that aim to benefit Providence, foster personal growth, and enhance leadership skills. Projects are designed to generate impactful business outcomes, encourage fresh thinking, and provide participants like Omar and Tina with expansive experiences in navigating complex environments. He has taken over the badge and access control over the last few months. The opening of our Hope Tower created a large volume of work with managing the access controls. Moving into the Hope Tower with a short lead time and working through all the “new construction” issues was quite a feat. We set up a Command Center for the move in and both Jesse and Pake worked several long days working with various vendors and subcontractors to resolve issues with typical new construction move in. Keith is developing the Covenant Security Program at our Covenant Hobbs Hospital and hired 6 officers to start this program in the last 60 days. He has worked with leadership to expand our current security program in Hobbs, Levelland, and Plainview. The caregivers in our Rural Service Area appreciate the level of Security that he has provided to serve their needs.
Jodi has been expanding the current manpower to cover Covenant Medical Center and Children’s in the Lubbock Service Area. We are very close to filling all positions on all 3 shifts. ~ Cindi Kenady – senior director environment of care

In March, we moved 3 patient units on the 3 different days to the Hope Tower and had 2 other patient care unit moves all within a 10-day time period. They headed up the Command Center for all 5, working closely with Construction, Facilities, Nursing, EVS, IT, Central Supply, Pharmacy, Chaplaincy, and many others. Taking extra measures to prepare and mitigation potential risks that could compromise patient safety. In the midst of this, was able to pivot to manage the Joint Commission survey at the Children’s Hospital.
