March 2024 Newsletter Division-wide LED lighting retrofit project kicks off at Providence St. Joseph Hospital Orange
Last month Providence St. Joseph Hospital Orange was the first site of many across the South Division to start their efficiency-driven LED lighting retrofit project. This project will save significant energy, carbon emissions and dollars. At the hospital campus of Orange alone, the project will annually save almost 600 MTC02e and just under $450,000 by switching to the more efficient and mercury-free LED lights. In the case of Orange, it is estimated that the project will reduce the number of lighting outages in the hospital by about 200 fixtures per year, reducing the disruption of operations as an added benefit. Other benefits include improved lighting quality and consistency for the staff, patients and overall environment.
The LED retrofit project has been approved for the South Division, including acute and non-acute sites, which projects an annual savings of over 3,783 MTCO2e (equivalent to carbon emissions from 10,000,000 miles driven!) and over $3.8 million dollars across the division. These savings come from energy savings, material costs avoided and the avoided cost of disposing the florescent lights on an annual basis, which cost more to recycle or otherwise dispose of. The 12,414 retrofitted fixtures from St. Joseph Hospital Orange will be recycled.
This is a great example of operationalized environmental stewardship initiatives within Providence. This work is led by the Providence Real Estate Strategy and Operations team and has significant financial and environmental impact. Good business practices that are also good for the earth. Projects at this scale could not be completed without the hard work and support from Providence leaders across the organization.
