Tyle Steele, maintenance supervisor – Providence Kodiak Alaska Medical Center – Kodiak, Alaska
Codi Allen, project manager – Providence Kodiak Alaska Medical Center – Kodiak, Alaska
Dale Rahn, executive director real estate operations – Providence Regional Building – Anchorage, Alaska
On January 29th, we lost pressure to our 2 OR rooms here at PKIMC. We found that we had 2 failed fire/smoke dampers. The fire/smoke dampers were 2 that were not on the as-builts for the hospital. Tyler and Codi both performed intense troubleshooting on the AHU system that led to the discovery of the 2 failed fire/smoke dampers. During that troubleshooting we found that we had an airflow station for the cold air intake completely plugged off, we had controllers for our return air wired wrong, and we had numerous calibration and programming issues as well. Tyler was able to replace one of the fire smoke dampers right away which led to being able to bring our OR 2 room back online in case of an emergency surgery was needed.
In order to replace one of the fire dampers, we needed an access door cut into our OR 1, which we did not have here locally in Kodiak, and it needed installed by a professional carpenter due to the location. With the help of Dale Rahn, he located 2 access doors locally in Anchorage and got them on Alaska Airlines the same day. Dale also sent a carpenter from Anchorage down the following day to get one of the access doors cut in immediately.
The contractor started cutting out the ceiling for the access door, when we got a call from our OR team, that we had an emergency C section coming in and we would need to stop work until they were finished. The surgery was completed, and after recovery, we were able to get back to work around 10:30 pm. The contractor completed cutting the hatch around midnight. Afterwards Tyler stayed until almost 2:30 am to make sure the fire/smoke damper was replaced and tested.
The next morning EVS and the OR team were able to perform a terminal clean, which lead to both OR rooms being operational and ready for patients.
There are a lot of other people that made this emergency project a success, which included local leadership, Infection Prevention, Quality, the OR team. But I really want to thank Codi Allen for his intense troubleshooting efforts while working with our control’s contractor, Tyler Steele for going above and beyond to make sure the OR team got their operating rooms back online to see patients in such a short time, and our leader, Dale Rahn for making resources available to us that we did not have locally. As the Senior Facilities Manager here in Kodiak, it’s this type of teamwork that makes me proud to work for Providence. Our team is truly living and working the mission, values and vision of Providence. ~ Victor Weaver – senior manager facilities
Tyler Steele, maintenance supervisor– Providence Kodiak Alaska Medical Center – Kodiak, Alaska
Caregiver worked extended hours, coordinated numerous work groups, and was essential in the repair/recovery of the OR AHU at a CAH. These are the only ORs on island, and the caregiver used critical thinking skills to determine a way to keep one OR functional, which prevented the need to transfer patients off island. The caregivers work also led to identification of unknown infrastructure, which was not captured on the as built drawings. This led to the repair of critical life safety components, while ensuring risks were mitigated to patient and staff. ~ Codi Allen – project manager
