Developing and operating high-performing facilities is a key strategy toward achieving Providence’s commitment to become carbon negative by 2030. This strategy is also essential for Washington State to meet its own environmental commitments, including the energy efficiency targets set for all hospitals in the 2019 Clean Buildings Bill. This bill encompasses all Providence hospitals in the Puget Sound Region, setting efficiency targets that need to be met by 2026 through 2028, depending on size.
Providence environmental stewardship teams in RESO and RESO vendor partner CBRE have been working with our colleagues in Government Affairs to advocate for appropriate energy efficiency targets that are both feasible and support our WE ACT environmental goals.
Our hospitals in the Puget Sound Region are well-positioned to comply with this law. Of the nine hospitals in the region, six are currently operating at energy efficiency levels that would meet these targets. Planning is ongoing to bring the other three into compliance. This outstanding performance reflects Providence Swedish’s long-standing commitment to energy efficiency within our facilities, improving our environment, while furthering our vision of Health for a Better World.
