The IS Research Technology Team led by Steve Nielsen, VP, population health & research technology, works with the Providence Molecular Genomics Laboratory to improve the process of analyzing genomes and identifying cancer biomarkers from sample to actionable data.
The role of IS in the lab has been expanding, allowing the laboratory staff to focus more on their work and less on operations. Some of the work the IS team are focusing on include:
- Modernizing processing to make it more reliable and efficient
- Ensuring all work meets InfoSec standards
- Standardizing data in Azure
- Partnering with Microsoft to help identify pharmaceutical clinical trials
The output of the biomarker data is used by many users including oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, geneticists, and researchers. Biomarkers help provide potential options for prevention, early detection, and therapeutic paths. Additionally, tumor boards use the information to determine the best possible treatment and care plan for individuals.
In addition to IS Research Technology, the Biomed & Clinical Engineering Teams from Clinical Technology Services (CTS) are managing the devices used in the labs, which helps to ensure reliable data collection.
Genomics is a critical piece in our path to Health for a Better World, and it is exciting to see how IS fits into this important initiative for Providence.
