HI’s Research Data Platform is Now the Advanced Computing Platform

IS Healthcare Intelligence (HI) has rebranded the team and platform formerly known as the Research Data Platform (ReDaP) to the Advanced Computing Platform (ACP) to reflect how it has evolved applications far beyond research.

Our priorities and goals stay unchanged, and we’ll continue to develop and support the platform to meet the needs of researchers in and out of the system. These goals include the following:

  • Continuing architectural and resource deployment refinement
  • Integration of non-Azure cloud environments as needed (e.g. Redcap)
  • Operationalizing the Microsoft Cancer natural language processing (NLP) model
  • Support for research requiring advanced mathematical/machine learning (ML) computing
Technical implementation and legal review of deidentification at scale for core Epic Clarity data
  • Data enrichment and processing for deeper insights into available data (e.g. structured data extraction from free text and vectorization)

ACP’s accomplishments range from foundational, such as connecting CDW to Gen2, RBAC, cost tracking in Azure — to transformative, such as cutting-edge research into COVID-19, sepsis, etc., as well as enabling Truveta.

Going forward

Strategically, ACP will be HI’s go-to cloud architecture for many complex, cloud-native workloads requiring operational support and stability. High level categories identified and expected to grow include:

  • Image analysis
  • ML
  • NLP
  • Forecasting and signal processing
  • Ad hoc statistical modeling and analysis
  • Non-relational databases operations (e.g., graph, document, geospatial)

ACP will model and lead best development practices, including continuous integration and continuous development (CICD), scripted resource deployments, cost optimization, and integrated metadata. We’ll also continue to expand the pool of available data for advanced computing. Our focus will shift from curating ACP-specific datasets to collaborating with other teams curating data models, such as Synergy, Caboodle, and Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP).

Since the diverse needs of the research community are often best served by expertise outside the ACP team, we’ll partner with the right teams in those cases.
