App and Server Owners: SMTP Relay Changing

Information Services is upgrading to Exchange 2019. As part of this upgrade, the legacy Providence SMTP (email transmission protocol) relay names are changing, which may require changes to your systems or applications connected to a mail server.

Caregivers managing applications and/or servers utilizing an IP address for the mail server will now be required to update the connection to use the named entry if currently using an IP address to connect.

Legacy SMTP Relay Names:

  • smtplegacy.providence.org — Unauthenticated by server IP
  • smtphost.providence.org — Authenticated

SJH out of scope: Legacy St. Joseph Health relays are not in scope.

When is this happening?

The Providence SMTP relay update will begin on May 18, 2021 and will conclude on June 4, 2021. During this timeframe, both relays will run concurrently.

What do I need to do?

Application/server owners with systems using an IP address for the mail server connection must update the IP address prior to June 4, 2021.

Action required

If your system or application is connecting to a mail server using an IP address, you must update to use the named entry instead of an IP address, between May 18, 2021 and June 4, 2021.

No Action Required

If your system or application is connecting to a mail server using the named entry, your mail will automatically be updated to route through the new relay when the DNS records are updated on June 4, 2021.
