HI Kicks Off BI Modernization Initiative

Healthcare Intelligence (HI) has started work on the BI Modernization Program to migrate off obsolete and overlapping systems, and move toward a collaborative, consolidated, secure, and scalable enterprise BI platform.

HI’s goals are to reduce redundancy and total cost of ownership (TCO) for Providence, leveraging the Azure Data Lake and Cloud Data Warehouse (CDW) as our primary data sources and maintaining flexibility for future solutions.

Timeline and benefits

We expect this initiative to span several years as part of the Providence’s transition to the cloud.

See the current BI Modernization: Program Timeline chart for its phases and goals.

Our strategic partnership with Microsoft enables us to standardize on their newest technologies. This consolidation and standardization will provide efficiencies of scale for tremendous TCO benefit. For example:

  • Shift from on-premises capital and maintenance expenditures to the cloud
  • Enhanced capabilities to manage data storage, exchange, and maintenance
  • Resource usage monitoring to enable verifiable cost management and control
  • Software licensing, support, and upgrades are simplified by cloud and remote administration
  • Data consistency and quality are enhanced as data sources are managed by data governance processes
  • Training and skills portability across organizations and teams improve caregiver collaboration and career opportunities

Standardizing on Power BI and Epic

Providence is standardizing to either Microsoft Power BI or Epic as our enterprise data analytics solution, depending on the scenario. Tableau, SAP InfoView, Cognos, and Alteryx are the legacy BI platforms under consideration for transition. There are specific annual goals over the next several years for retirement or migration for each.

Power BI allows us to broaden the population of report developers to a more self-serve model of report development without involving HI.

HI’s BI Modernization program team will help IS prepare for this transition by sharing how to use these platforms, analyzing workflows for migrations and new development, and sharing updates as the transition progresses over the next several years.

Rationalizing our BI reporting

Rationalization is the practice of evaluating usage, capabilities, and cost effectiveness of technology according to our strategic objectives and roadmap. According to its principles and core activities, the program will:

  • Analyze all reports on these platforms
  • Sunset any unneeded or redundant reports
  • Evaluate the report to use the optimal data source
  • Take the opportunity to modernize to Power BI or Epic tools when appropriate

Centralizing our data

HI will be working to further consolidate our data in the CDW, with the migration from the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) well underway. We are implementing the Informatica Axon and Data Quality facets to improve significantly how the HI data governance team manages our access, monitoring, evaluation, and optimization of our data sets.

  • Align with appropriate and consistent use of data
  • Enable self-service reporting and analytics for all users
  • Establish sources of truth for key data domains for EMR
  • Push appropriate business logic and modeling into CDW
  • Leverage the best capabilities of both CDW and Power BI
