In November, we shared our journey to the new Cloud Data Warehouse (CDW) and the partnership Healthcare Intelligence (HI) needed from it IS partners.
We are continuing to modernize our data technology from the old, on-premise PHS Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) to the CDW on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. All data on the EDW must be migrated to the CDW. By the end of March 31, 2021, all partners must be ingesting data into and consuming data from the CDW, rather than the EDW.
The transition to the Microsoft Azure cloud platform is part of the overall Providence IS data strategy to:
- Improve performance, scalability, and reliability
- Reduce processing footprint by consolidating redundant data sources and BI applications
- Reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to on-premise data center
- Azure cloud management enables flexible, on-demand, self-serve asset creation/removal with improved cost management capabilities
- Making Power BI the reporting standard simplifies licensing, support, maintenance, and training
- Improve data governance by standardizing to “single source of truth” when consolidating data sources
- Meet our organizational goals to modernize and move to the cloud
Milestones and access shut-off
HI and our partners are analyzing and migrating their data now. The target for all EDW migration completion is March 31, 2021. User access will be shut off on April 1, 2021, except for archiving and decommissioning processes.
- Partners can start the migration process for data they own now
- During migration of HI owned data marts, partners can start working as soon as their objects are in the CDW
- We intend to achieve project milestones no later than:
- January 1, 2021: All objects (structures) created in CDW – any dependent development and front-end repointing can proceed
- March 1, 2021: All data loaded – validation and testing can start
- March 31, 2021: All data and object validation complete
- April 1, 2021: EDW user access removed
Actions required by data owners
Our partners are responsible for migrating their own data. Your reports, dashboards, and other products must be updated or redeveloped to use the data in the CDW. HI will move the data that they own.
Partner groups need to:
- Coordinate and communicate any UX changes with your end users
- Learn how to use your BI application with the Snowflake platform that hosts the CDW
- Analyze and migrate your data marts
- Start updating your products when the HI data objects you use are migrated
- Address any upstream or downstream impacts connected to your data flows
- Update or develop your products to use only the CDW before EDW sunset
