As we shared during our IS Open Forum reflection on May 5, the historical archives of how the 1918 pandemic impacted Providence ministries over a century ago provide us with a perspective of another difficult crisis. Just as today, the influenza (Spanish flu) pandemic called upon the resilience, self-sacrifice and ingenuity of our caregivers and Sisters to overcome.
The Providence Archives is a treasure trove of information from over 150 years of our ministries and services in our communities. Here are just a few of the finds the Archives wanted to share that provide lessons and hope for our current COVID-19 era.
- 1918-1920 influenza entries from the Providence Chronicles of the Western Ministries
- Photograph of a handwritten page from the 1918 St. Vincent “death ledger”
