Lab Applications Begin Transition to the Cloud

Our Laboratory Applications team, with support from the IS PPMO, recently helped Oregon PSJH labs go live with our first instance of CernerWorks RHO (remote hosting option). This begins the transition of our critical laboratory applications, providing better redundancy, easier future Cerner upgrades/patches, and better data insights. You may have heard of this project referred to as “Cerner hosted.”

Go-live was March 23 for labs in Oregon, which is the first PSJH region to be part of our gradual migration to one system-wide instance of Cerner. By the end of consolidation, we will be one of the largest Lab Data Insight users on a single platform.

The cloud-based remote hosting option provides fail-over and redundancy, preventing catastrophic downtime. The hosted option also keeps us compatible with all Cerner software upgrades and keeps upgrades and patches current with little effort.

This project involved many technical challenges, such as right-sizing hardware needs for things like RRD faxing, as well as upgrading circuits in our Tukwila and Quincy data centers. We experienced no MIs during go-live. Since then, we have had two minor MIs, including one related to the Citrix icon.

“Ultimately, to our caregivers and our patients, this provides a smoother, more reliable experience, with no downtime affects to the lab services and the care received,” says Maryam Milani-Biladi, exec. director, laboratory applications.

The next phase is to move our Washington state Cerner lab services to CernerWorks RHO, with that project starting this summer.
